When the Next Gen Comes Home: Leadership, Legacy & Retail Reinvented

What three returning leaders teach us about the future of family-run footwear businesses

What happens when the next generation steps back into the family business—not as stockroom support, but as full-fledged leaders?

In Episode 16 of The Footwear Retailer Podcast, Pete Mohr brings together three dynamic voices from the NSRA’s Next Gen program:

👟 Abba Carmichael – Abbadabbas (Atlanta, GA)

👟 Jake Humphreys – Humphreys Bootery (PA)

👟 Keegan Keel – K&D Shoes (GA)

Each of these leaders left the family business to pursue their own path.

And each made the decision—intentionally, courageously—to return.

This episode isn’t just a story of succession. It’s about identity, innovation, communication, and the tension between honoring the past and building what’s next.

Stepping Away to Step In

All three guests spent significant time away from the industry:

  • Abba explored different careers before returning with fresh eyes and a deeper sense of purpose.
  • Keegan ran a successful apparel manufacturing company before the passing of his grandfather called him back.
  • Jake pursued accounting and coaching before realizing retail was his true calling.

What pulled them back?

A mix of personal alignment, timing, and a shared sense of duty—not just to the store, but to themselves, their legacy, and the communities they serve.

“I felt a moral obligation,” Keegan shares. “It was time to square up with everything this business has given my family.”

From “Kid of the Boss” to Capable Leader

Returning to a family-run business isn’t always smooth. As Abba describes, the most surprising challenge wasn’t the tech or the trends—it was earning the respect of the team:

“I’m not just the daughter of the founder. I’m here because I care. I’m working to earn my seat every day.”

Jake echoed a similar theme:

“No one doubted me—but I had to stop doubting myself.”

This transition from familiar face to respected leader often includes a reckoning with imposter syndrome, boundaries, and redefining value beyond title or tenure.

Good to Great: Driving Innovation in Legacy Systems

Innovation doesn’t always mean reinvention—it often means refinement.

Keegan put it best:

“Starting something from scratch is one thing. But taking a 30-year-old business from good to great? That takes a different kind of strategy.”

Each guest shared how they’ve introduced new systems, reimagined workflows, and led cultural shifts within their teams:

  • Upgrading decades-old POS systems
  • Introducing digital efficiencies and AI automation
  • Creating clearer processes and assigning true accountability
  • Honoring legacy without becoming trapped in it

Communication: The Real Family Currency

Underneath every operational update, every team meeting, and every generational handoff is one thing: communication.

“Whether you’re talking about Thanksgiving dinner or the store’s share structure,” Pete notes, “those conversations have to happen clearly and consistently.”

Open dialogue with parents, team members, and self-reflection are key to a healthy transition. That includes setting boundaries, aligning vision, and defining who’s accountable for what.

The Future? It’s Human.

Despite all the systems talk, this conversation kept circling back to one thing: people.

“We don’t sell anything you can’t buy online,” says Keegan. “So why should customers choose us? Because of service and selection.”

In a world rushing toward automation, AI, and endless digital channels, these leaders agree—what will always set independent retail apart is experience.

  • Listening deeply
  • Asking the second question
  • Recommending with empathy
  • Creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and helped

That’s not just customer service. That’s a mission. And it’s the one thing that can’t be replaced by a screen.
